Grown-up Halloween Party

I know how very far behind I am on posting my new encounters (6 weeks now!), but I will find time over the holidays to catch up. In the meantime though, let me tell you about some really great ideas to use and hilarious games to play (as adults) at a Halloween party. I don't have any pictures of anything yet because, well, we haven't actually had the party yet! Not to worry though, I will put pictures up once I have them :)

Beverage
Using Pinterest of course, my roommate found a recipe for "witch's brew".  All you need is a 2 liter bottle of sprite, 1 liter of pineapple juice, 1 liter of cranberry juice, and 1.25 liters of Malibu Rum (if you'd like). We will be serving our brew in a cauldron, with frozen hands floating in it to keep it cold. (to make the frozen hands, just pour some water into a latex glove and freeze it) Another, equally creepy, option is to freeze plastic spiders in ice cubes.

Decorations
Our decorations will be minimal this year, as we are both college students with limited funds to spend on frills. Nonetheless, we bought white crepe paper to decorate the inside of out door like a mummy, some fake blood to spookify the bathroom mirror, and a string of orange and purple lights to line our entertainment center with, among other small decorations.

Games
My roommate and I took some games we were already familiar with and made them Halloween themed. Let me just warn you that this is my favorite part, and these game only work if you get really into them.

Pumpkin Smoochie
If you have ever seen "Just Go With It" then this game is exactly the same as coconut smoochie, but with a small pumpkin. If you haven't seen the movie, let me give you the details. Basically you and a partner start with a pumpkin between the two of you, right at your belly button. Then, you try to move the pumpkin up to your mouths without using your hands. I hope this makes sense :)

Side Effects
This game is an on-going one that lasts all night. Here's the scenario: There is a zombie virus going around and anytime someone winks at you, you catch the virus and start acting like a zombie about two minutes later. The only way to rid yourself of the virus is to take the antidote pills (2 or 3 Mike N' Ikes), but these antidotes often come with side effects. The pills will be on a (fake) bloody tray in small plastic containers, and on the bottom of the containers are a number that will correspond with a side effect. We will have some dice to determine the duration length for that effect. The side effects we came up with are as follows:
1. You become mummified. Let someone wrap you in crepe paper streamers and leave them on for ___ minutes.
2. Two limb joints are delayed in coming back from their stiff zombie-state. Keep either your elbows or knees straight for ___ minutes.
3. You turned into Frankenstein, but you lost your tongue in your zombie-ness and can't talk until you find it. *
4. You develop a hunchback and 1 short leg for ___ minutes.
5. You become a ghost (with a sheet over your head) until you ___**
6. Your left arm goes numb and you can't use it for the next ___ minutes.
7. This antidote turned out to be a placebo, pick another one.
8. You develop werewolf symptoms and have to stagger around on your tippy toes for ___ minutes
9. You are now put under a spell and must accept 3 truth-or-dare challenges from anyone.
10. You are cured with no side effects.

*We are going to cut a tongue shape out of pink eraser and hide it before anyone arrives. Then, after the first person finds it, they have to hide it in a new place for the next person who gets that side effect.
**We left this one open-ended for fun. You can choose whatever you like, or let your party guests choose each time that side effect comes up.

As far as the side effects go, you can choose to add more, take some away, or change them to fit your liking. Also, once a person has been winked at, they cannot infect anyone by winking at them until their side effect has gone away.
We are super excited to play this one!

True American- Hocus Pocus style
If you have seen the drinking game "True American" from the show New Girl, that is the general idea here, but we have tweaked some things to make it match our favorite Halloween movie: Hocus Pocus. Since the rules of the game were not exactly clear in the episode of New Girl, here is a link to get you familiarized with the general idea and rules of the game. Please note that even though this is intended to be a drinking game, it is a bucket-load of fun with non-alcoholic beverages too.
Okay, so now that you have read the rules of True American, let me inform you of the changes in our rendition. (It will make more sense if you are familiar with the movie.)

The 4 zones will be labeled as Master's House, Graveyard, The Village, and the Sanderson House.

There will only be about 16 spaces in our game, and one of them is going to be a laundry basket with ice cubes in the bottom, for "holy water" that is burning our feet.

Terminology changes: We are going to call the castle the apothecary, the king the potion, and the knights/pawns the ingredients. On that note, everyone will more than likely be drinking something different, so we will each contribute to the potion by pouring out a little of our drink into the center cup (rather than having a bottle of alcohol), and once someone has finished all of their drinks, they have to drink the potion to win.

To move, we are going to incorporate a 4th option and tweak the others. The count will remain the same. To move two spaces, you have to correctly answer a movie trivia question (from Hocus Pocus or another Halloween movie). To move 3 spaces, you have to finish a quote from the movie. To move 4 spaces the person whose turn it is will make up the first half of a spell and the other players will have to finish it with a phrase that makes sense and the last word of the phrase must rhyme with the last word from the first part of the spell. For example: first person "The night is dark and the moon is bright..." Others "send my broom into flight", or "turn this frog into a kite".

One last thing. On the website that the link takes you to, there are New Girl random rules, and one is about throwing your empty cans to the trash and saying "All the garbage belongs"..."in the junkyard!" For our variation though, we will yell "All the bodies belong"... "in the graveyard!"

As far as Halloween 2014 goes, that's all we have planned! However, even though it's not much I have full faith that we are going to have a blast. My boyfriend and I are dressing up as Haymitch and Effie Trinket from the Hunger Games, so I might post about that when we're all finished, but if I don't you will see pictures on this post when I get them up!

I would love to hear about your favorite things to do at a Halloween party in the comments section at the bottom of this post!

I hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween!

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta

Good morning and happy Tuesday! I know how terribly behind I am on my new blogs, but I will surely catch up like I always have. On a totally different note though, I went to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta this last weekend and it was incredible and nearly indescribable. While I was there, I just kept saying "this is so awesome," but in truth that doesn't cover the half of it. Seeing a couple hot air balloons up close and personal is pretty cool, but multiply that by about a hundred. It literally took hours for all the balloons to get off the ground and I was standing right in the middle of it as they were being blow up and lifting off. Plus, the massive amount of people who showed up for this annual event was pretty impressive. I don't even want to try to guess how many were there because I'm sure it would be grossly underestimated, but it was a whole lot. I could keep rambling on, but I'm not sure I could convey the shear awesomeness that is balloon fiesta without pictures, so I'll let you get to looking at those now. But just hear me out on this last point, if you haven't gone to Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, it's worth adding to your bucket list.
